I usually recommend X/Y or Heartgold/Soulsilver to people first. X/Y if you want the slightly more modern feeling game in quality of life and map design, Heartgold/Soulsilver if you want to play the game with a ton more content.

you don't need a website, i use a program called openemu that does a bunch of systems, but i prefer playing on hardware. my favorite generation of pokémon is 2, i'd like to recommend crystal version but it's so damn expensive now due to people being annoying about 'collecting' online. if you don't already have hardware and a cartridge, i'd recommend emulating.

you can also download hacked roms, crystal has some great ones that i've played, but my favorite is crystal kaizo (difficult, but some great edits made by the creator).

The first pokemon game I played that wasn't first-gen as a kid was Ultra Sapphire, and I was like whoa holey shit. The graphics. The flying. The postgame content. The fact that they just give you a Latios. And I haven't enjoyed a pokemon game that much since.
