1996 bugs, updates, suggestions

gm gm this is where I'm going to post about work being done on the (currently) default forum style titled 1996. I'll keep the top post updated with known bugs, goals, and any other helpful info. I'll make posts in the thread about what I'm working on day-to-day.

if you ever have any input at all, no matter how insignificant, I hope you feel encouraged to post it in this thread. Making decisions about the forum style is a really fluid process and I want the community to feel included in the that process.

It is your forum, after all.

xx,
A

KNOWN BUGS

-header banner shrinks weird when you shrink the browser window on desktop. DONEZO
-header banner should be a clickable link to the forum index DONEZO
-unread notifications do not get a special highlight or marker of any kind
-notifications are inconsistent in general (might be sitewide and not 1996)
-ouhhhh that's all I got off the top of my head

Experimented with the prosilver(?) for a bit and the notifications were still spotty, I think it’s likely sitewide

Hello all,

Does anyone else think it would be better if the avatars of users were
aligned in the center? It's especially jarring when an avatar is less
than 150 pixels wide. I see "avatar" is a class in the CSS and maybe
you could try giving it the ol' "margin:auto;". But, then again,
it could require more than that, and I could be the only one bothered
by this.

Also, if possible, I would like a dark version of the "orb_classic"
(1996) theme. I understand this is a ridiculous suggestion, but I
ask because 1) my computer monitor has terrible screen burn-in but
I don't want to use "orb" instead of "orb_classic", and 2) I would
be willing to make it myself if all it requires is messing with
the CSS and getting some GIFs. Maybe. I fucking hate XAMPP but
I could maybe use it if that's necessary to preview changes
and all of that shit. I'm now realizing that this bit of typing
my message as if this were a mailing list isn't that funny but
I'm too lazy to retype it. Sorry.

Thanks,

mdr

fuck i hit the quote button instead of the edit button i am going to cry. anyway i was using view-source and i dont even know if it's worth it to center the avatar actually since it's aligned with the username and other stuff. i am very embarrassed...

to clarify: "orb_classic" is not actually the 1996 theme. 1996 was the original default theme but is now fully discontinued.

as for the rest - we've talked about doing different colorways for orb_classic before, but, obviously, have never gotten around to making them. i'll reach out to some of the people who actually know what they're doing (read: not me) tomorrow to "get the ball rolling", unless one of those people sees this before i get back on my computer.

oh wow!!! thank you!!!!! i only know html and css (do those even count??? i feel like everyone my age and older "knows" them) so even though i enjoy sitting around and messing with stuff to a certain extent i would probably end up breaking something :unamused: i just asked because it seems like most of the people involved with themes and stuff are very busy and i didn't want to bother them. i honestly didn't think anyone would even see my thread until much later if all all. so. um. thank you  :D :happytime: :) :bighappy:

oh wow. that tracks though, my initial impression of this site was "huh what? they had to have used xenforo for this" and then being blown away by the phpBB footer

creg did the current default theme, so you can pay him your compliments. i've just been plugging holes in it when i run updates and trying to make little changes people ask for, when i have time (very busy playing cities skylines, etc.)
