sleeper hit poster dimes (from impression: guy who only likes cosmic bowling fame) reporting in for a thread about emo and math rock. they both are on mondays so it'll just switch randomly
i am starting off the list with this song because its also deep dimes lore, listen to the end for "how i got my style". the comments section on this video is pretty funny.
happy monday and also monday readers
here are my picks for the last two weeks
topping off the emo end of things is elder jack https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOVZjYYab9Y https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNsBLbn0iJA
elder jack is sort of the debut band from an artist called ch point - who mostly up to that point was known for arranging midis of other emo bands, and then setting them to videogame soundfonts. their first album covers through a lot of styles in a really short time - a lot of 2010s revival sounds, a 'football' style track, and also a kind of interesting alex g cover for some reason. the way they fit together most these different approaches ends up bringing a lot of innovation, too.
the math rock pick this time is pretend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysSimfiM3tE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jee-Pi_h0XQ
there's not a ton of public info about this band, but they're a really neat group from california that really seem to take their time between releases. the overall sound is pretty tame and quiet for math rock, but they keep just enough texture with syncopation to keep you riding towards the crescendos. the peaks in the albums reach really high, so it feels like the rest of the sound is giving you time to recover and calm down a bit - super enthralling. the minimalist approach definitely shows they put a lot of thought and intent into how they lay out tracks - theres a sense of design language to it all that ties things together. it carries through on a lot of the web design they do too: https://pre-end.com/
well ok thats what i have this time. not sure why i am committing to a regular schedule on a subboard i keep forgetting about but here it is
look who's back for mem+mm . thank you all for your continued passive acceptance of this thread
I'm pulling an emo band out of the woodwork this time. check out December's Architects https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sY0yEI0Vqzc
This is a pretty fun band that flew totally under the radar mostly because they disbanded before actually deciding to release their first full album. After playing mostly smaller gigs they recorded it in full but decided not to do anything until years later, which is pretty sad to think because it possibly could have made a lot more waves when the style was more popular. Each song on this record often embodies 2-3 identities that it will just switch between throughout the track, super dynamic to listen to, but it still knows when to hold things back and let something calm carry you through the end of a track. There's a lot of unique sampling in this record too, which is pretty rare for a band around ~2001. This is from way before the time it was fashionable to just sample a sappy line from a movie, so instead there are a lot of weird things brought in, played in reverse, or just muted in the background for some cool texture. Things like that make a lot of sense when you learn a Kinsella is behind this record...
I couldn't find individual track uploads for this album, but my standouts are "a hemmingway cat", "living off the interest", and "that that"
this week i will be talking about "How it Feels to be Something On" by sunny day real estate which so far is probably the most recognizable mem+mm pick
i spent last week without AC and in all the heat wanted to find an album that matched that same overbearing, sweltering energy. The runner up for this would have
"departures and landfalls" by boys life - the album art there was in my mind a lot last week, but this album wins out for the actual tone of its tracks. It felt like a pretty accurate match to how I felt melting at my computer late each night. SDRE is pretty well respected emo band, and while I don't personally think this album is underrated or anything, it's still a pretty unique entry to the scene. The opening, "pillars" starts off with a pretty mellow post-hardcore sound, but almost like a trick pulls you into proggy psych sound. It's the interconnection between these genres that make the album stand out even now. While not quite as loud or fast-paced, if you're on a road trip with a bunch of friends who only like king gizzard, this is probably about the closest thing to emo you could put on the playlist without turning any heads.
