I think things only change with time.

I saw a twitter post of someone upset that something on the internet doesn't exist anymore, but everyone in the comments replied to that thing saying "Hey this thing does exist, but in a different form now in a different place." And the original poster replied to it all with dismay saying it's not the same.

It kinda struck me negatively. Because, while it was a shame that the original thing disappeared, but the concept still existed, people may have moved on from it but new people where experiencing the same emotions, the same sense of community and belonging that the original poster once in a new form, in a new place on the internet.

Like even our social personalities are continuations and repeats of themselves. People are like no one goes Rawr XD unironically anymore but at the same time there's people on tictok talking in babified voices saying doggo i love chimkin nuggies

It's the classic "Kids these days will never know about _____" but I believe there's a shared human experience on the web kids will experience similar communities, sites and all that similar to all of the experiences we had.

I think you're on to something, Spence.

In some ways, I feel like the Orb is an example of this. I've always gotten early-Internet vibes from this place; like back when Internet clout didn't exist and people just put stuff online for fun.

Always a continuation of ideas, twitter2 came before this and when it disappeared the orb took it's place and I'm sure the orb will turn into something else in the future.

this is proven by the amount of image macro templates that basically just say "your thing bad my thing good" There's like 8 different ways of saying "your thing is weak and stupid and my thing is buff and cool" and it's the same cycle every time. It always starts off as something taken completely ironically and a satire of the template, and then people misunderstand it and use it unironically so then it's not funny anymore.

Undoubtedly, we can see those kinds of templates from ages ago, this isn't prehistoric but well over a century ago and way pre internet.

There's 100% gonna be stuff like this since Forever, I think it's just a human thing. Same goes for a lot of other things.

i do think it's true that each generation has sort of equivalent experiences in a broad sense, but it's also true that each persons experience is finite. we all have a unique perspective, it's just "bad" to believe your unique experience is "better" or more meaningful.

i miss being a kid and playing sega and playstation on the couch with a friend. of course multiplayer games still exist, and i could even go get a dreamcast and boot up ooga booga for a party, but i'm not experiencing it the same way because i'm a different person. i've grown and changed.

it's not bad to be nostalgic, just don't let it become hateful towards what's new.
