Porcellio laevis are a soft-bodied aggressive and protein loving species endemic to europe but which have taken root in almost North American ecosystem. As opposed to the other common European species, Armadillidum vulgare, Porcellio species are said to have a mild taste when compared to the strong notes of celery present in harder-bodied isopods.
Step 1) Gut loading - feed them whatever you want them to taste like a week prior to euthanizing. In this case I picked apples.
Step 2) Bring the isopods into dormancy by placing them in a refrigerator for 30 minutes then euthanize by transferring to freezer.
Step 3) Rinse these bad boys.
Step 4): Fan fry with some sesame oil, brown sugar, and soy sauce.
Step 5) Consume
They were crunchy with a nice shrimp-like aftertaste. The soy sauce and sugar helped to subdue some of the bugginess, but overall I would eat these again. 8/10
